Oyato by D’banj – a review

Multiple award winning singer D’banj has released his first single titled ‘Oyato’ since he and ace producer Don jazzy parted ways, March this year.
The new single Oyato produced by Jay Sleek who has been signed on as a producer for D’banj maintains a lot that fans have always known D’banj for.
The usual head bobbing, pop beats, hits you first as the approximately three minutes song begins to run followed by an all male chord chorus sang in yoruba language.

Music production was on point, Jay Sleek pulled it through… good. D’banj can be heard in the mix intermittently chanting ‘Oyato’ as the chorus endures but he comes fully alive in the verses; his voice strong yet somewhat emotional.
In Oyato, he maintains that he is D’banj and nothing can change that fact about him. The song cast a stark picture of his recent travails. He reflects on rumours whipped up behind him and the unknown truths he couldn’t bring himself to say. He, however, states that he overcame simply because he is D’banj, a different human being – ‘Oyato’.
D’banj’s harmonica which had varnished from his songs for sometime now is dusted up and used judiciously in this number. Towards the end of the song, D’banj is heard telling Jay Sleek “I wish they’d know me better”
The song is barely days old, yet it’s gained a wide acceptance that is staggering although not surprising; many fans literally worship the star – D’banj.
However, some critiques note that the song may have ended “too soon”. D’banj ran a chorus-verse1-chorus-verse2 pattern that abruptly winded down. There wasn’t that usual hooker that doubled as a bridge just after the second verse which helped threw his songs and everyone trapped within into splintering climax before it’s eventual closure. This was a strong trait he had maintained in his previous songs with Don Jazzy.
It’s however a song coming straight from D’banj’s heart. He maintained the upbeat tempo; filling his voice with positive energy that suggests he is still possessed by that soul so far from giving up. He made his point absolutely clear.
He is D’banj and different – “Oyato”.

My rise to fame unexpected – Davido1 He is just 19 years, yet he looms larger than life. In less than two years of his entry into the music industry, David Adedeji Adeleke a.k.a. Davido has become one of the most celebrated musicians in the country.

He shares his story with our Entertainment Editor, OGBONNA AMADI.
The last time I saw you on stage was at the finals of the Nigerian Idol. Between then and now, so many things have changed, can you explain why?
Jesus. If I could explain, then I’d be lying because everything happened fast. But one thing I’d always tell myself is that; I remember exactly a year ago at Eko Hotel. I was at Ice Prince’s album launch and I told myself that I too must do same thing. So I had to work hard.
I’ve been working hard and prayed for God to bless me with hit songs because I know that when you have God and support like good structures, then, everything will fall in place. To me, whoever God wants to blow will blow.
This whole thing; did you expect it to be this big?
I didn’t expect it to be this big at all. When I first started in the industry, I used to tell myself that I don’t want to be too big. I just want to be in the industry and don’t want to be known too much. But after some time, I started getting bigger and people could recognize me anywhere I go. It’s just crazy. It comes with a lot of benefits though. Like at first, my father didn’t want me to go into music. But now, anywhere both of us go, people call him Baba Omo Olowo.
So, he didn’t want you to go into music?
No he didn’t. He was 100% against me. He just wanted me to focus on education. But after my music became big, he goes to parties and hears my songs. With this music I have been traveling everywhere; I traveled to like seven countries in just six months.
With just one song?
Yes.
What has changed?
(laughs). My house…
You just bought a new car…
Yes. What has also changed is that people take me more serious now. At first, my family didn’t take me serious but now, they do. I feel I now have a job, a profession. So it feels really good that I’m doing something where I make money from.
How did it all start?
It started about two years ago at Atlanta Georgia, I was schooling in America for about two years
Studying what?
I was studying Business Administration and I remember when I came home for Christmas one December, I saw how crazy the industry was getting and I was amazed. I saw the likes of D’banj, Wande Coal, P-Square getting shows for millions. I knew I’m also talented too so I decided to give it a try. So I came back to the country. But when I came back, it was very rough for me. My dad was against my music

Yes. I left school in America
To follow your dream
Yes. But I’m back in school running a part- time programme. One thing I told my dad was that even if I’m not in school, he should allow me do part-time. So that’s what I’m doing now. So when I moved back, it was hard for me. I survived by chilling with Shank, Wande Coal, D’banj and even Don Jazzy who supported me until I dropped my first single. I couldn’t go back home then.
You couldn’t go back home?
It’s not as if I couldn’t go back home. I wasn’t at home. If I was at home, I’d have to be in school. So that’s why my dad and I were not on speaking terms for like a month. But one day, he just called me and told me he wouldn’t want to take my dreams away from me.
He said he dreamt that music is my dream and told me that if I have to do it, then I have to do it right. He challenged me to make it big. And I can say he’s one of my biggest fans now.
You wrote the song?
Yes.
What inspired that song?
I was trying to tell folks like my dad not to stop me from doing my music because everybody was trying to stop me.
Are you sure you are not into this for the money?

No it’s not for the money. I don’t know what happened, I remember when we recorded that song, my house was quiet for like two days because the song touched everyone in my family. Everyone, including our cook all said the song was going to blow. I played it for my dad and he told me it’s a hit. So we dropped it around late November. And from then, I can’t even remember what happened, because so much has happened so fast.
But it was a slow start initially…
Yes. It was a slow start. But like I said, I don’t know what happened. If I have to start explaining, I’d be lying. It’s all God’s doing.
So how do people see you on the street?
It’s crazy. At every show I go to, I have like sixty to seventy Area Boys following me and my car. Every where I go people want to have handshakes with me, some would say “Davido I love you,” some would just want to touch me.
How do you control the girls?
I’ve always been getting girls even before music. But it’s always about self control and knowing what you want to do. You can have fun everyday if you choose to. But at the end of the day, you know what you have to do.
So what’s been the most embarrassing moment for you with girls and the fans?
It was my picture that went viral. The one that showed up in Ghana.

Was it really your picture?
Yes.
So why did you let down your guard?
I was sleeping, when the photographs were taken and that’s it.
And what did you do to the girl after that?
Nothing.
Is she still with you?
I don’t know where she is.
Thought you are signed on to D’banj’s label, now you’re talking about HKN. Is that also D’banj’s label?
D’banj and I work together but HKN is my label. We recorded the album on HKN label
What’s HKN?
Hakkan in Arabics meaning King Of Kings. It’s mine and my brother’s label. D’banj and I are business partners and he’s my big brother.
So you’re not signed unto his label?
Wait and see.
Surprises?

But you’re doing it with Flytime. Why did you choose Flytime?
Because Cecil promised he’s going to do my album launch if I could get him a hit record. I promised him I was going to come back to him with deal; a hit record. Today it’s a deal come true.
And you have a new one, Ekuro?
Yes.

Yes. I was in the car one day with my consultant and he was playing some old school songs. When I heard it, I thought about doing something in that direction. So I just put it in my own way.
So what do we expect on Sunday?
It’s going to be crazy. Expect it to be one of the greatest shows in Lagos ever. We’ve planned for it from acting to everything. It’ll feature acts like Tuface, P-Square, D’banj and everyone that counts in the game.
What’s growing up like?
I wouldn’t say growing up was sweet but thank God I have wonderful parents who brought me up. My mum passed away when I was ten. So from then, it was just my father and I
He never re-married?
Yes, he re-married.
You schooled in Lagos?
Yes for some time and then went to America for two years for my University until I decided to come back.
So why did you decide to shoot your new video Ekuro in America and not in Lagos?
I went to America because I want my music to be international. Right now I’m planning to shoot my next video in Sudan
Why Sudan?
You’ll know when the video comes out.
Do you have a visa to Sudan?
When we get to the bridge we’ll find a way across. I’m an American citizen remember
Why did you choose Sudan?
Because there are deserts there.
What message are you trying to pass across with such video?
You’ll see it.

I have about seventeen tracks
…And you worked with how many producers?
I worked with five of them, big names like Chizee, J Sleek, Dr. Frabz, myself and one other person.
How many collabos?
About four- with May D, Tuface, Naeto C and myself
Has anything changed in the music industry since you came on board?
I’ve only been here for a year. The technology is growing. We have things like Twitter, Facebook and different things, that were not there in the past
I need to know what happened that led to your being slapped by a policeman?
Nothing really happened. I was just on my bed going through the internet and I saw the story. I was amazed. I didn’t get slapped.
You weren’t anywhere around there?
No. I wasn’t. I was in Lagos but the story said I was in Abuja.
So how did that make you feel?
I don’t care because it didn’t happen but people would always talk.

Gunmen attack bank, kill policeman in Kogi

0 Iyara – Gunmen suspected to be robbers on Friday night, attacked a bank and police station, killing a policeman at Iyara Community in the Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi.
An eye-witness told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the robbers who invaded the town, divided themselves into two groups before they commenced operation at about 9.45 p.m., shooting sporadically into the air.
NAN learnt that one group attacked the Iyara branch of a new generation bank, bombing the strong-room with explosives and carting away cash from the vault.
The robbers were said to have gunned down a policeman on guard duty at the bank before blasting the strong-room.
After robbing the bank, they were said to have headed straight to the Divisional Police Station, where they met strong resistance from the Police Anti-Terrorist Squad which foiled their plans to loot the armoury at the station.
Some residents of the town who spoke to NAN, said that the robbers held the town hostage for a long time, detonating explosives indiscriminately and shooting sporadically.
The Spokesman of the Kogi State Police Command, Mr Ile Simon, confirmed the incident but could not give the casualty figure or amount stolen from the bank.
“We cannot say for now, all we got from there is that they attacked the bank and our station and there was exhange of fire,” he said. (NAN)

CAN raises alarm over bomb factories in Kabba

Following the recent spate of bombs discovery in Kogi State, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Kabba chapter has raised fresh alarm to security agencies to help comb the city on the likely presence of more bomb factories in the town.
The Christian body in a letter to the state government signed by Pastor S.S. Ayodele called for the deployment of anti – bomb squad to the town to sniff out more likely points where bombs are manufactured.
Pastor Ayodele who is the Secretary of the Association said the call become imperative in order to check what he termed as influx of aliens into the town especially the Odolu Market which according to him is not a business hub centre nor a residential area.
The Secretary who argued that the market is gradually becoming “a den for all sorts of people” stressed that “if not checked, something worst may happen in the town”
CAN who also questioned the mass migration of certain people referred to as Bororo to the town called for the closure of business activities as from 6.00pm daily.
Kabba, which is the headquarter of Kabba/Bunu LG; and the political and social cultural centers of Okun people have been under numerous bank robbery attacks where dynamites were used in recent times while a bomb house was also discovered in the town by the SSS in March this year.

Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole's Multi-Billion Naira Mansion Exposed

In furtherance of its trademark promotion of responsible governance and encouragement of complete public abhorrence of corruption, We had on Sunday 15th May 2012, published the story (and pictures) of the ongoing construction of a multi-billion naira edifice, belonging to governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, who is renowned for professing his association with the lowly and his disdain for ostentatious living.

“Buried in his hometown of Iyamoh, off Auchi-Okene Road near Auchi, the sprawling estate houses multiple swimming pools, fountains, multiple theatres for cinemas and live entertainment, and a huge events hall,” we had written, adding that, “His widely perceived incorruptibility as a former labour leader and current public office holder completely negate all possible explanations for the source of the fund with which he has been prosecuting the construction of a grandiose multi-billion naira country home, which was a secret project until Saturday when it was unearthed.”

Of important note is the manner and style of our conclusion, which reads: “As news of the stately mansion is certain to spread in the weeks ahead, Governor Oshiomhole will be faced with the uphill task of convincing his hordes of followers that the project has been funded with money other than public, and that he, being only a civil servant for many years until he became governor of Edo in 2008, has incorruptibly accumulated enough wealth to own such imposing edifice.”

Expectedly, the media team of Oshiomhole, led by Tony Iyare, special adviser (media affairs); and Peter Okhiria, the chief press secretary, has responded. But what was unexpected is the vitriol that coloured its lengthy but empty statement. A statement of clarification was the ideal, but the team chose to launch abuses at a media agency’s innocuous pursuit of an incorruptible society. If anything, the statement has further served to implicate Oshiomhole.

“Our attention has been drawn to this fairy tale about a purported multi-billion naira mansion being built by Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, in his native Iyamho, concocted by an online publication, The Will, and parroted by Nigerian Compass of Monday, April 16, 2012,” the release began. “We are aware that the promoters of this laughable falsehood had gone round many media houses in Lagos with sack-loads of blood money to induce its publication, but were turned down outright on the basis of the amateurish job done, until the cheap bait finally caught these unconscionable hacks in the periphery of yellow journalism.”

However, We, the responsible agency that it is, will never trade abuses with the governor or his media team; we will never return tirade with tirade. We had the facts of a story, bared it before the public and asked the governor to defend himself. Nowhere in the piece did we expressly pronounce the governor guilty, as we are not a court of law; albeit we had stated, quite logically, that the governor was faced with the “uphill task” of convincing his followers that the building of the mansion was not being footed with public funds.

One point must be stressed: from Oshiomhole’s media team’s release comes another implicating, self-made revelation that must be explained to the public.

“The facts: Governor Oshiomhole built his country-home at Iyamoh more than 20 years ago. Everyone knows the road to the house in question. In fact, all his houses, including the one located in Kaduna and Abuja, were built many years before he ever contemplated contesting the governorship seat in Edo State.” So the team wrote. Their words; not ours.

The minimum interpretation of “more than 20 years ago” is 21 years. If Oshiomhole had built houses in “Iyamho,” “Kaduna,” and “Abuja,” since “many years” ago, then there, really, are more questions he must answer. Where did he make the money to build “all his houses?” Where was Oshiomole’s career “more than 20 years ago,” 1991?

Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole was born in 1953, 4th April to be exact. He secured a job at Arewa Textiles Company in 1969, after completing his secondary school education. In 1982, he was appointed general secretary of the National Union of Textile Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria, a union with a membership base of some 75,000 workers; after becoming a fulltime trade organiser in 1975. It was in that role that he became a frontline activist in the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

So, how did a textile unionist cum public worker have the huge funds to build “all his houses” in at least three regions of the country? Two of the mansions we mentioned in our initial report – one in Maitama, Abuja and another in Kaduna.

And if Edo State’s finance is half as strong as he claims, what is the basis for its latest borrowing, which Oyare and Okhiria admitted when they wrote: “Only last week, the World Bank granted the state a credit support of $225 million, which is envisaged to spread over a three year period.”

Governor Adams Oshiomhole will do well, in his next release, to honestly answer these self-imposed questions, particularly by logically marshalling his arguments to prove his incorruptibility, which his media team has further splotched with its wrong-headed vituperation.

To state the obvious clearly, We have no political or financial interest in Governor Oshiomhole or any other Edo politician seeking his office. We will write our stories on any public official whose claim to incorruptibility we find questionable. We will continue to ask questions.

Baby With Many Legs Needs N1m To Live

A baby girl that was delivered with many legs and no anus needs N1 million for corrective surgery for her to remain alive, medical experts said.

Baby Nafisat was born on June 18, 2012 to the family of Ahmed in Bayo Local Government Area of Borno state. But her parents’ joy was turned to sorrow when she was delivered with complex abnormalities.

According to medical surgeons, Nafisat needs an intensive surgery to make her remain alive.

But her parents have no means of paying for such surgery; hence, they called on the Borno state government, especially the First Lady, to come to their aid.

Dr Adamu Madugu, the Medical Director (MD) of the Federal Medical Centre, Gombe, said Nafisat risks losing her precious life if the surgery is not carried out immediately.

He said: “Nafisat was referred to the Federal Medical Centre, Gombe, and has been admitted in the Special Baby Care Unit with a case of imperforated anus and multiple abnormalities.

“The patient has to undergo a series of surgery in order to correct various enormities.”

Blueprint

gathered that the girl, who now lives solely on various medical gadgets, needs N1 million for an all important surgery.

Madugu said with N1 million, Nafisat would be able to pay for her surgery, drugs, investigation, pints of blood, feeding and accommodation.

“Unfortunately, the parents cannot afford the money due to financial constraints,” said the Surgeon who solicited that only government can help the poor parents to save the life of the baby.

Magistrate Orders Lawyer To Frog-jump For Noise-making

It was like a drama yesterday during a Court session, when the presiding Chief Magistrate of an Osogbo Magistrate Court, Adewunmi Makanjuola ordered a middle-aged lawyer, Nnajite Okobie, to observe a five-minue frog-jump as a punishment for making noise during the court proceeding.
Makanjuola, who was presiding over a case of alleged rape of an 11-year-old primary school girl was apparently disturbed by the noise emanating from Okobie, who was having a conversation with two people suspected to be his clients in the court premises.
He had earlier sent the court orderly to warn him to desist from making noise but he failed to adhere to the warning of the court.
Provoked by the action of Okobie and his two clients, Makanjuola therefore ordered the court orderly to invite the trio before him.
The Chief Magistrate told them to decide on whether to be docked for contempt of court or observe a five-minute punishment of frog-jumping and then ordered the court orderly to sanction the trio by engaging them in a five-minute frog-jump stressing that their action had put the court in disrepute.
It was a sight to behold for the workers of the court. While some were full of pity for Okobie, others were seen making mockery of him.

The problem I have noticed really with the online business for people in naija is how to get the payment and how to get accepted into this various affiliate programs. A good solution might be to have a friend open the account for you who is in the US or set up a co affiliate with someone in which you use their affiliate id and you get paid for your part buy the use of a sub id, the problem here might be trust issues.
